EIB Allocates 41 Million Euros for Moldova’s Railway Upgrade

The European Investment Bank (EIB) will provide the Republic of Moldova with a credit of 41.2 million euros for the rehabilitation of railway tracks. This concerns the important corridor in the center and north of the country: Vălcineț-Ocnița-Bălți-Ungheni-Chișinău-Căinari.

The loan agreement project has been approved by the Parliamentary Committee for Foreign Policy. Committee members gave the green light for the initiation of negotiations and the approval of the signing of the Financing Agreement between Moldova and the EIB.

The project involves a loan of 41.2 million euros provided by the EIB and a grant of 12 million euros from the European Union. According to authorities, the repair of the railway section will have a positive impact on the economy of the Republic of Moldova, as it will create the necessary conditions for attracting freight volumes and increasing the number of passengers.

The financing agreement will be repaid within a period of up to 30 years, and the “Calea Ferată din Moldova” enterprise will periodically submit reports to the European Investment Bank, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, and the Ministry of Finance on the progress of the project.
