EU and CoE Launch Justice Reform Support Project in Moldova

The Minister of Justice, Veronica Mihailov-Moraru, participated in the launch of the joint project of the European Union and the Council of Europe “Support for Justice Reform in the Republic of Moldova.” During the launch event, the first meeting of the Steering Committee took place, during which the action plan for the first year of project implementation was presented and approved.

The project’s aim is to support the authorities in enhancing the independence, responsibility, impartiality, and transparency of the judicial system, including the prosecution system, in line with the objectives set out in the Strategy for Ensuring the Independence and Integrity of the Justice Sector for the years 2022-2025.

It will also assist in implementing justice reform in accordance with European standards, with a strong focus on the recommendations included in the opinions of the Venice Commission and the compliance report of the Group of States Against Corruption (GRECO).

“On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Moldova, we express our gratitude to the Council of Europe and the European Union for their support to the Ministry of Justice, which encourages us to act correctly and professionally, aligning ourselves with European values in the field of justice and human rights,” emphasized the Minister of Justice, Veronica Mihailov-Moraru.

The project will run until November 2026 and has a budget of 2.7 million euros. The beneficiaries include the Ministry of Justice, the Constitutional Court, the Superior Council of Magistracy, the Superior Council of Prosecutors, and the National Institute of Justice.

The event was attended by EU and CoE officials and experts, representatives of development partners supporting justice reform in the Republic of Moldova, as well as members of the Superior Council of Magistracy, the Superior Council of Prosecutors, the National Institute of Justice, the Constitutional Court, judges, prosecutors, legal professionals, and civil society representatives.
