European Council approves 40 million euro assistance to support the defense sector of the Republic of Moldova

The European Council adopted two assistance measures under the European Peace Fund (EPF) in support of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Moldova and the Defense Forces of Georgia to enhance the national security, stability, and resilience of the defense sector of both countries.

The assistance of 40 million euros, calculated for 36 months, will be used to purchase equipment, supplies, and non-lethal weapons for the units of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Moldova, including technical training, where necessary.

Support includes aerial surveillance, mobility and transportation, logistics, command and control, and cyber defense equipment.

“With this new assistance, we continue to support the modernization of the capabilities of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Moldova and the Defense Forces of Georgia. In a challenging geopolitical context and line with their European aspirations, we are helping to strengthen their defense sectors and improve their ability to participate in EU military missions and operations. This is the third EPF assistance package for both countries, clearly highlighting the EU’s unwavering commitment to security and stability in the region”, said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borell.

According to the European Council, these assistance measures will improve the operational efficiency of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Moldova and the Georgian Defense Forces and will accelerate their compliance with EU standards and interoperability, which will better protect the civilian population during crises and emergencies.
