The MIA Instant Payments System, developed by the National Bank of Moldova (BNM), was officially launched today in Chisinau, marking a historic event in Moldova’s financial market. This innovative system is now accessible across the country’s financial institutions, offering consumers, and businesses the ability to transfer money in less than 15 seconds, without any commission fees, and regardless of the bank, solely based on the recipient’s phone number. This provides citizens and companies with a swift, secure, and efficient means of conducting transactions.
BNM Governor Anca Dragu expressed confidence that MIA will soon become a widely accessible technology for every citizen and entrepreneur. She emphasized how MIA will streamline financial transactions, drive economic growth, and promote responsible money management. This significant milestone propels Moldova towards a modern financial landscape while solidifying its position among nations embracing advanced technologies to bolster economic development and enhance citizen access to financial services.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean highlighted that the implementation of the MIA instant payments system signifies a pivotal moment in the modernization of Moldova’s payment infrastructure. U.S. Ambassador to Moldova, Kent D. Logsdon, emphasized that the BNM-developed system represents not only a technological breakthrough. It is also a transformative leap forward, fostering financial inclusion and digitalization of payments. He noted that implementing instant payments and gaining experience in this process will propel Moldova closer to the European economic area.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean took part in the inauguration ceremony of the MIA instant payments system, orchestrated by the National Bank of Moldova (BNM). During his participation, the Prime Minister emphasized the significance of this event in the ongoing modernization of Moldova’s domestic payment infrastructure. He underscored that the implementation of this system will accelerate and streamline financial transactions while reducing associated costs, ultimately enhancing economic security and efficiency, as reported by the government’s communication department.
“In launching MIA, we reaffirm our commitment to innovation, fostering equal access to payment services, and bolstering sustainable economic growth. This represents a tangible step forward in supporting our citizens and aligning Moldova with the European digital economy,” added Dorin Recean.
The launch of the MIA instant payment system, developed by BNM, occurred during an event organized in collaboration with the Institutional and Structural Reforms Activity Programme of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Instant payments allow for swift fund transfers in Moldovan lei between accounts within seconds, operating 24/7. This feature makes instant payments an exceptionally convenient option for quick and efficient transactions, irrespective of the time or day of the week.
Furthermore, transfers of up to 10,000 lei per month incur no commission fees, while larger transfers will have commissions capped at 5 lei per transaction, ensuring affordability and accessibility for all users.
