Guests at the Presidency: Maia Sandu met with a U.S. Congress delegation made up of Republicans and Democrats

On Monday, April 14, President Maia Sandu of the Republic of Moldova met with a bipartisan delegation from the United States Congress visiting Chisinau. The delegation arrived as part of the House Democracy Partnership—a commission of the U.S. House of Representatives that supports young democracies in strengthening parliamentary institutions through experience-sharing and technical cooperation, the Presidential Office announced.

The delegation included four Republican and four Democratic congresspeople, two members of the Moldova Caucus, which promotes deeper Moldova–U.S. relations.

“Congressman Vern Buchanan led the delegation, whose visit reconfirms the bipartisan support Moldova enjoys in the United States and highlights the continued presence of Moldova–U.S. partnership on the American agenda,” President Sandu stated. During the talks, she expressed her appreciation for the consistent support the U.S. has provided over the past three decades—support that has helped modernize the country, strengthen its energy resilience, and defend its sovereignty against external destabilization attempts.

President Sandu also warned about the risks of Russia’s hybrid attacks, including efforts to influence Moldova’s electoral process. She emphasized Moldova’s crucial role in maintaining regional stability along its 1,222-kilometer border with Ukraine, which remains under Russian invasion. In this context, she stressed the need to maintain U.S. support, particularly for Moldova’s energy security.

The U.S. congressional delegation included Representatives Vern Buchanan (R-FL), Neal Dunn (R-FL), Andy Ogles (R-TN), Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), Dina Titus (D-NV), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), and Ted Lieu (D-CA).
