Human metapneumovirus, a novel viral infection: recommendations from the ANSP

A new virus wreaks havoc worldwide. The National Public Health Agency (ANSP) warns about the global surge in respiratory infections, including those caused by the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). Children and elderly individuals remain the most vulnerable to this virus.

The Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) belongs to the Pneumoviridae family and includes the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Discovered in 2001, HMPV infects the upper respiratory tract in people of all ages. However, it severely affects children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

The virus causes symptoms similar to influenza and other acute respiratory infections, including fever, cough, nasal congestion, and, in severe cases, breathing difficulties. While most infections are mild, complications like pneumonia can occur, particularly in vulnerable groups.

Although Moldova has reported no HMPV cases this year, ANSP confirmed eight cases in 2024.

HMPV spreads through respiratory secretions (coughing or sneezing), contact with contaminated surfaces, and close interactions with infected individuals.

To prevent respiratory infections, ANSP recommends the following measures:

  • Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow when coughing or sneezing.
  • Maintain distance from individuals showing respiratory symptoms.
  • Regularly ventilate rooms and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.

The ANSP specialists urge citizens to consult a physician at the first sign of symptoms and avoid crowded areas.
