President Maia Sandu and her Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, adopted a joint declaration in Kyiv, highlighting the main aspects of bilateral cooperation.
The parties reaffirmed their “commitment and ability to provide urgent and concrete solutions to meet the energy needs of residents in the Transnistrian region, prevent further escalation of the crisis, and restore essential services,” as stated in the joint declaration issued by the two heads of state during their meeting in Kyiv on Saturday, January 25.
During her meeting with President Sandu, the Ukrainian leader reiterated strong support for Moldova and shared the negative impacts of the crisis affecting both nations.
“Our neighbors are in a grave and unstable situation, and only together can we address this, especially in the areas of energy and social challenges, which our common enemy exploits against the interests of Moldova and our entire region. The absence of crises in Moldova is, above all, our security,” Zelenskyy stated, according to IPN.

Following the meeting, Maia Sandu shared a summary in a social media post:
“We discussed common challenges and how Russia is trying to blackmail us with energy. Together with Ukraine, we are stronger and better prepared with solutions to protect our citizens, including those in the Transnistrian region, and to ensure light and warmth in every home.”
In the joint declaration, the two leaders emphasized that Russia’s large-scale aggression against Ukraine and its continued violations of international norms “call into question Russia’s role as a mediator and guarantor in various conflict situations, particularly in the Transnistrian region.”
Additionally, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Maia Sandu expressed a strong determination to take joint steps to strengthen energy security and diversify energy sources to ensure supply stability and reduce dependence on external influences.
