MAI clarifications regarding Romania’s entry into the Schengen area: Moldova’s border crossing rules remain unchanged

The regulations for crossing the border of the Republic of Moldova remain unchanged, and individuals are permitted to cross using the same documents as previously. The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) announced today Romania’s entry into the Schengen area.

Non-EU nationals must meet certain conditions to enter EU/Schengen Member States. They must possess a valid travel document that allows them to cross the border and is valid for at least three months from the expected date of departure from the Member State’s territory. The document must have been issued within the last 10 years.

It is important for the person to justify the purpose and conditions of their planned stay and to have sufficient means of subsistence for the duration of the stay, as well as for the return to their country of origin or transit to a third country where admission is guaranteed.

On 31 March of this year, Romania and Bulgaria became members of the Schengen area, eliminating border controls at airports and sea ports on the Black Sea. This allows people to travel to and from other EU Member States of the European Economic Area/CH (except Cyprus and Ireland) without being subject to border controls.
