In the coming period, the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, will make several visits abroad to persuade some states to support the initiation of accession negotiations with the European Union. The statements were made by the head of state to Radio Moldova.
The head of state stated for the source mentioned that the authorities will continue to work on the dimension of foreign policy and fulfill the nine conditions. No matter how significant the obstacles created by some corrupt groups within the system, the Republic of Moldova has the support of the European Union and is determined to move forward, emphasized the head of state.
“I will have several visits, especially to the countries where we want to ensure that we will have a positive vote for the initiation of negotiations. We will work extensively on foreign policy, and, of course, the government on domestic policy to meet the EU conditions. To have both political support and excellent technical assessment so that we can make this decision to start negotiations as soon as possible. Of course, we have problems in the justice system, but the EU sees the genuine effort of the authorities. I don’t think we will have substantial problems with this issue,” said Maia Sandu, according to the source.
In March 2022, President Maia Sandu signed the application for Moldova’s accession to the European Union. Earlier, Georgia, following Ukraine, submitted a similar request to the European Union.
On June 23, 2022, the Republic of Moldova was granted the status of candidate country for accession to the European Union. To start the actual accession negotiations with the EU, the Republic of Moldova must fulfill the nine recommendations issued by the European Commission in June. The areas addressed include justice, combating corruption and organized crime, de-oligarchization, public administration and public service reform, public finance management, strengthening the role of civil society in decision-making processes, and human rights protection.

Moldova has fulfilled three of the nine recommendations of the European Commission over the course of a year. Authorities in Chișinău have previously stated that meeting the pre-accession conditions is the main goal of the Republic of Moldova this year so that, by the end of the year, Moldova can move on to the next stage – opening accession negotiations.
