After the European Commission recommended to the European Union the initiation of accession negotiations for the Republic of Moldova, the country’s President, Maia Sandu, has shared her initial response on her Facebook page.
“An important day for Moldova’s future – the European Commission has recommended to the EU member states to initiate negotiations for the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the EU. This step is a recognition of our collective effort – the state institutions working to transform the country and the citizens choosing peace, democracy, and development. The European Commission’s report confirms that Moldova has undertaken significant reforms in the past year, preparing our country to become a European state and improve the lives of all citizens. The final decision regarding the start of negotiations with Moldova will be made by the member states at the European Council meeting on December 14-15.
Today’s decision by the European Commission encourages and empowers us to continue what we’ve started: to make Moldova stronger, a state that ensures peace at home, contributes to regional security, and takes care of the well-being of its citizens. There’s much work to be done. The path we’ve chosen is full of challenges. We’re not afraid of the hard work, and our goal is for Moldova to be ready to join the EU by 2030. The Republic of Moldova in the European Union is our unique chance to guarantee a future of peace, freedom, and prosperity for the entire country,” wrote Maia Sandu.
It’s worth noting that today, the European Commission recommended that the European Union begin discussions regarding the accession of the Republic of Moldova. The announcement was made by Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission. The decision to initiate negotiations will be made in December by the European Council, which consists of the heads of state and government of the EU. According to international press reports, if there are no objections, negotiations are likely to commence in March or April 2024.
