Mayors at “National Consensus”: We are not great ideologues, but we can demonstrate the advantages of European integration through deeds

Through their visions and actions at the local level, mayors are the significant ambassadors of European integration. Constantin Cojocaru, mayor of Edinet municipality, and Vladislav Cociu, mayor of Stefan Voda, were the guests on the program “National Consensus” onĀ RLIVE TV. According to them, local elected representatives can demonstrate where the values and investments for life improvement in Moldova come from.

The mayor of Edinet said it is still early for everyone to understand the importance of European integration. He stated that capitalizing the association funds would give citizens more arguments in the European vector favor.

“Nearly all the funds coming to the Republic of Moldova originate from the European perspective, US agencies, or non-Eastern countries. These realized projects can be a convincing formula. Mayors, by their way, are not ideologues, but they can demonstrate where the real values and real investments come from that will move the country forward,” said Constantin Cojocaru.

Vladislav Cociu, a mayor with more than 20 years of experience, said that Euroscepticism still marks the southern region due to some voices expressing a negative attitude towards the European Union. However, people understand where there is welfare and better living conditions.

“Things need to be done not just in the center by renovating a house of culture. They need to be felt by every citizen. I happen to start my working day listening to the arguments of Eurosceptics. We make an effort to explain to them what the European Union means and the benefits of European integration, of the reforms we are going to make”, said Vladislav Cociu.

The guests mentioned that they are counting on communication with the central authorities for closer coordination of the European integration process to reach every citizen. At the same time, they appreciated the support of European partners for the development of Moldovan localities.
