Unprofitable state-owned enterprises in the Republic of Moldova will be shut down, Economy Minister Eugen Osmochescu said during the TV program “Puterea a patra” on N4.

“The enterprises that do not generate profit must be closed,” the minister stated, emphasizing that reforming the sector is a priority for 2026. He warned that maintaining such companies puts pressure on the public budget and may create legal risks for the state, including compensation obligations toward former employees.

Osmochescu explained that authorities already rely on a public list managed by the Public Property Agency, which classifies enterprises based on their future—liquidation, reorganization, or privatization.

“Where we can privatize, we will privatize. We aim to attract investments and strategic investors,” the minister added.

He gave Poșta Moldovei as an example of a company that, although profitable, requires modernization and investment. According to him, its extensive infrastructure could become a competitive advantage if managed efficiently and developed further, including with support from European funds.

The minister also said that stagnation in some state-owned enterprises has resulted from a lack of clear vision and corruption. He stressed that digitalization and the use of artificial intelligence could help reduce such risks.

Regarding the selection of enterprises for liquidation or support, Osmochescu said authorities based the process on economic and performance criteria and made the full list publicly available.

As of April 2026, the state holds shares in 225 companies in Moldova, 161 of which are traditional state-owned enterprises.
