Moldova is preparing for the integration of its electricity market into the European market

Moldova has joined the Local Implementation Project (LIP) to integrate its spot electricity market into the European energy network. The Energy Ministry described this as a crucial step toward liberalizing Moldova’s electricity market and aligning it with the unified European framework.

The project, initiated by market and transmission system operators from Moldova, Ukraine, Romania, Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary, aims to facilitate the integration of participating countries into the European energy market.

The Local Implementation Project prepares Moldova’s electricity market for participation in the Single Day-Ahead Coupling (SDAC) and Single Intraday Coupling (SIDC). Its objectives include exchanging critical information, enhancing the legal framework, and implementing joint organizational and technical solutions for EU market integration. The necessary procedures, tools, and mechanisms for coupling electricity markets will be developed, tested, and deployed.

In February 2024, the Energy Market Operator M (OPEM), a subsidiary of Romania’s OPCOM, was designated Moldova’s electricity market operator. The following month, the National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE) issued OPEM the license required to manage Moldova’s market operations.

The Energy Ministry stated that establishing organized electricity markets will facilitate short-term electricity trading through day-ahead and intraday markets, providing dynamic pricing across various timeframes. Furthermore, integrating Moldova’s electricity market into the European network will streamline energy trading with EU partners, strengthening cross-border cooperation and energy security.
