Moldova to Expand Renewable Energy with Two New Photovoltaic Plants

Two large photovoltaic power plants will be built in the Republic of Moldova by late 2025. They will be located in Negureni, Telenesti district, and Radeni, Straseni district, increasing the total installed capacity of renewable energy sources by 90 MW.

The photovoltaic plant in Negureni will have an installed capacity of 40 MW, while the one in Radeni will have 50 MW. Both will be operational by December.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the two plants will generate over 100 million kWh annually, helping to cover a significant portion of the energy needs on the right bank of the Dniester River. After their commissioning, the total installed capacity of renewable energy sources will reach 670 MW, up from 580 MW at the end of 2024.

The Government is reviewing draft decisions to authorize the construction of the two plants. Under the Electricity Law, building power plants with a capacity greater than 20 MW in the open market requires Government approval.

According to the National Center for Sustainable Energy, by the end of 2024, the installed capacity of renewable power plants—including solar, wind, hydro, and biogas—will reach nearly 580 MW. It marks a threefold increase compared to 2022 and an eightfold increase compared to 2020.

Statistics show that last year, renewable sources generated 691,000 MWh of electricity, accounting for 16.72% of Moldova’s annual consumption, excluding the eastern districts. Authorities aim to raise the share of renewable energy to 30% of total electricity consumption.
