Moldova wants a long-term agreement with Romania regarding the delivery of natural gas

The Republic of Moldova wants a long-term agreement with Romania regarding the delivery of natural gas. The statement was made by Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Spînu, in an interview for RFI.

“It would be a lifeline for many years to come. We have discussed it many times. So, the ball is in the Bucharest Government’s court, we are waiting for an answer and we are ready to move forward. We have no alternative”, declared Spînu.

The deputy prime minister does not know why the decision-making in Bucharest related to Chisinau’s gas request is being delayed.

“Probably there are also certain problems with gas supply in Romania. However, we believe that what is needed for Moldova is less than 5 percent of what Romania produces. It would be a lifesaver for many years to come for our country. We were interested in any volume this winter. Even 150 million cubic meters of gas for the whole winter, not necessarily per month or just 2 million per day or 1 million per day. So we are looking for any alternative. The moment we have and for smaller quantities, we are ready to sign. If there will be larger quantities, very good”, stated Spînu.

Meanwhile, several Romanian MEPs requested emergency aid from the European Commission so that the Republic of Moldova does not run out of gas due to huge bills. And the Prime Minister from Bucharest Nicolae Ciucă recently declared that Romania can give the Republic of Moldova a maximum of five million cubic meters of gas per day.
