Moldova’s Relations with the US in the Trump Era, Marked by Uncertainty? Popsoi: “We Will Work to Strengthen the Dialogue”

The Republic of Moldova continues a strategic dialogue with the United States, even amid the current uncertainties where the new administration in Washington has put several projects and funding on hold. Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popsoi states that Moldova and the U.S. still share a strong partnership, and the government in Chisinau will do everything in its power to convince and raise awareness among American partners about the realities in our country.

“We believe these uncertainties are temporary, and just as Moldova has had a solid partnership with the U.S., it will continue to do so. Our relations with Washington are bipartisan. We have strong ties with influential congressmen who know our region well,” said Mihai Popsoi on the “Cutia Neagra” program.

The minister also mentioned that the U.S. can decide how to spend its taxpayers’ money. During this period of uncertainty, Chisinau will continue to identify alternative sources of support.

“There was a time when they were more generous; now they focus more on domestic issues, which is their absolute right… We will make all efforts to raise awareness among American partners about the reality in Moldova. Congress approves the budget, and congressmen approve it and hold the power, so representatives of the White House, the National Security Council, the State Department, Commerce, and the Treasury will also be involved in the dialogue about international sanctions. We have this ongoing dialogue and will maintain it because American partners are indispensable. We will work to strengthen the dialogue at the highest level. To what extent we will succeed remains to be seen, but what is certain is that we will make efforts,” emphasized Mihai Popsoi.

In January, the U.S. announced a 90-day suspension of foreign aid to allow for an assessment of the effectiveness of programs and their alignment with the new administration’s foreign policy. The decree signed by Donald Trump stresses that the foreign aid industry and bureaucracy do not align with U.S. interests and, in many cases, are contrary to the country’s core values, contributing to the destabilization of world peace. As a result, the president’s foreign policy will fully align with the granting of foreign aid.
