More German-Donated Piranha Armored Vehicles to Strengthen Moldova’s Defense Capabilities

Another two Piranha armored vehicles will be delivered to Moldova on Tuesday from a batch of 19 carriers donated by Germany, is said in a statement of the Ministry of Defense, according to “INFOTAG” agency.

“The Piranha armored vehicles are being received as part of the objective to modernize the capabilities of the National Army and based on the arrangement signed between the Ministry of Defense and the German side in October 2021. These carriers are used in the training of soldiers who are to be deployed on international peacekeeping missions,” the statement reads.

The first three carriers arrived in the country in January 2023. Subsequently, in batches of two to three vehicles, another 12 armored troop transport vehicles were delivered.

Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatîi mentioned that these carriers will replace the old equipment of the National Army. German armored carriers can be equipped with various weapons according to customer requirements. The basic armored personnel carrier is usually equipped with a remotely controlled 12.7mm machine gun and a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun or a 40mm automatic grenade launcher. The vehicle is operated by a crew of 2 or 3 people and can carry 8-9 fully equipped soldiers. The roof has hatches for observation, firing, and emergency exits.
