Nicu Popescu Tapped as Potential Chief Negotiator for Moldova’s EU Membership Talks

Nicu Popescu could be the chief negotiator on behalf of the Republic of Moldova for accession to the European Union. Prime Minister Dorin Recean stated that the chief negotiator on behalf of our country will be “a deputy prime minister.”

Currently, there are three deputy prime ministers in the government – Nicu Popescu, Oleg Serebrian, and Dumitru Alaiba. Recent public information suggests that Nicu Popescu may resign from his position as head of Moldovan diplomacy and return to Brussels.

If Nicu Popescu vacates the position at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it may be filled by Cristina Gherasimov, who is transitioning from the Presidency to the role of Secretary-General of MAEIE. The name of Iulian Groza is also mentioned as a possible new Minister of Foreign Affairs.
