On April 27, Moldova honors the tricolor. History-making events

On April 27, the Republic of Moldova honors the tricolor. It is not only an official symbol, but also a landmark of pride. The tricolor is present at important events in the life of the nation, from the proclamation of independence to participation in international competitions and cultural events. The Flag Day takes on a special significance, reaffirming the citizens’ desire for a peaceful and democratic future.

The National Flag Day was instituted in 2010 by a Parliament decision , but the roots of this holiday are linked to April 27, 1990, when the blue, yellow and red tricolor was proclaimed for the first time the official flag of the Moldavian SSR, in the context of the national revival movement.

The flag of the Republic of Moldova is identical in structure to that of Romania, but is distinguished by the presence of the state coat of arms in the center of the yellow stripe. The coat of arms contains the heraldic eagle holding a golden cross in its beak, and in its claws it has a scepter and a green olive branch – symbols of sovereignty, peace and wisdom.

This year, Moldova marks 35 years since the adoption of the tricolor as a symbol of sovereignty, independence and national identity.

The three colors also have symbolism: blue represents the clear sky, loyalty and truth; yellow signifies the wealth and grain of the Moldovan fields, and red evokes the blood shed by the ancestors for freedom and the courage of the people. Together, these colors reflect the unity of the past, present and future of the Republic of Moldova and its citizens.

On April 27, flag honoring ceremonies and many other events to mark this event are held across the country. —
