Opening New Opportunities for Export: Moldovan Apples Make Debut in Swedish Supermarkets

Moldovan apples have made their debut on the shelves of supermarkets in Sweden, according to the Moldova Fruct Association. Recently, a company from Moldova delivered two truckloads of Granny Smith and Golden Delicious apples to Sweden.

“The importer did not have any special requirements, except for the superior quality of the product. The apples were delivered in 13 kg net boxes with compartments. The lot was accompanied by a Pesticide Residue Trials Report and internationally recognized certificates. The transit period was 4 days,” said Ion Tulei, the director of the company.

Sweden, like other Scandinavian countries, depends on apple imports. Although it is not one of the largest importing countries, its negative trade balance in apples can be attractive to foreign suppliers. The total value of Sweden’s apple imports, at €89 million in 2020, is higher than that of most European countries. With no substantial local production, apple imports are relatively stable.

Almost 80% of the apples consumed in Sweden are imported. Most of the apples are imported from European countries, but there are also imports out of season, predominantly from Chile and New Zealand, as well as increasing imports from Ukraine.

In 2020, Moldovan apples were exported to 11 countries, and last year, they reached 30 destinations. Earlier this year, the first container of Moldovan apples from the 2022 harvest arrived in India.

The Moldova Fruct Association hopes that this first shipment to Sweden will be a promising step in expanding the Moldovan apple market and attracting new buyers from other Scandinavian countries. The quality of Moldovan apples is said to be high, thanks to the country’s favorable climate and unique varieties.
