The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova will hold hearings on Tuesday, July 7, regarding the situation of several foreign workers employed at a company in Moldova who were found living in repurposed train wagons near Chisinau.
The request was submitted by the PAS parliamentary faction following the emergence of public reports concerning the workers’ living and accommodation conditions.
According to MPs, the information published in the press indicates possible public health risks and potential violations of health and safety rules, labor protection standards, residence regulations, and the legal framework for the employment of foreign citizens.
Representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the General Inspectorate for Migration, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, the General Police Inspectorate, and other competent institutions will be invited to the hearings. During the session, authorities are expected to present details on the conditions in which the workers were housed, actual living and hygiene standards, as well as information on compliance with migration and foreign employment regulations.
The General Inspectorate for Migration issued 101 contravention reports following checks carried out on more than 100 foreign workers, citizens of Bangladesh and Nepal, at a site in Chisinau municipality.
The sanctions were applied for failing to declare changes of domicile or residence to the competent authority for foreigners, as required by law. During the inspections, officers also identified two foreign citizens staying illegally in the territory of the Republic of Moldova. Procedures have been initiated for their placement in public custody.
