President Maia Sandu: “It is essential to go to the referendum and say your opinion”

President Maia Sandu emphasized the importance of participating in the referendum and expressing opinions. Over the past two years, authorities made significant strides towards European integration, with continued efforts planned. Sandu highlighted that all EU states have declared their support for Moldova’s accession to the EU.

“We need internal clarity, as we already have external clarity. All European Union states have supported Moldova’s EU candidacy and the start of negotiations. In the next 2-3 years, we must work quickly. We want the people of the Republic of Moldova to decisively affirm that this is the choice of most citizens, preventing certain politicians from distorting the situation,” said Maia Sandu.

She expressed confidence that the referendum will yield a strong and convincing response domestically and within the European Union.

“Let’s enshrine it in the Constitution. We are Europeans; we need to formalize it. A loud and clear answer in this referendum, with a high turnout, is crucial. This important decision needs broad citizen participation, and I am confident it will happen. It’s not enough to aspire to EU membership; it’s important to go to the referendum and have our say. Every vote should count, providing a clear answer from Moldova, as it is from EU member states,” said Sandu.

Discussing the prospect of joining the European Union, Sandu said, “Citizens will decide. I trust their wisdom and believe they will choose tranquility, peace, development, well-being, and the prospect of European integration. I engage with citizens about how we can protect honest people, create development opportunities, and improve living standards, foreign policy, and security policy. We also discuss enhancing infrastructure and increasing investment in local communities. It concerns me and the citizens,” said Maia Sandu.

Presidential elections in the Republic of Moldova will be on October 20, 2024. On the same day, there will be a constitutional referendum, asking citizens, “Do you agree with the amendment of the Constitution for Moldova’s accession to the European Union?”
