President Maia Sandu said that Moldova’s withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Independent States does not mean a break in bilateral relations with member countries. She said the authorities will keep agreements that benefit Moldovan citizens.

Maia Sandu stressed that the government in Chisinau wants to deepen real cooperation between states, not just formal ties, including with some CIS members. She referred to the opening of new diplomatic missions as an example.

She explained that Moldova has opened embassies in some countries and developed cooperation in new areas with others, such as Armenia. She said these actions do not harm citizens interests and aim to bring concrete benefits.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Chisinau announced that it has started procedures for Moldova’s complete withdrawal from the CIS, including the denunciation of the founding agreement. Russian officials said the Kremlin did not find the decision unexpected.
