President Maia Sandu led discussions on the modernization opportunities for localities in the Republic of Moldova within the context of the country’s accession process to the European Union. The event, themed “The Future of Local Public Administration,” organized by the Government in collaboration with the Congress of Local Authorities of Moldova, brought together representatives from over 700 localities, including over 580 municipalities and cities represented at the mayoral level.
In her address, President Maia Sandu emphasized the importance of strengthening the partnership across all levels of public administration, highlighting that authorities are taking concrete steps to build a European country. She underscored the key role mayors play in community development, particularly concerning accessing funds.
“Our common goal is to create strong, united communities, improve living conditions at home, and transform the entire Moldova, village by village, city by city, into a European country with a life lived in prosperity and mutual understanding,” stated President Maia Sandu.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean reaffirmed the government’s commitment to close collaboration with local public administration to find the most effective solutions and enhance the lives of people across the country.
“In our effort to build Europe at home, we need trustworthy local partners, honest and responsible mayors who will help us bring prosperity to every home. Together, we will focus on generating more local revenue to improve the social services offered by municipalities,” mentioned Prime Minister Dorin Recean. He also discussed the government’s priorities to support local public administration, including salary increases for mayors, vice mayors, and council secretaries, along with launching a new call for the “European Village” program.
The Forum’s agenda comprised two discussion sessions with representatives from the Executive, Parliament, and experts from the associative environment. Participants delved into topics related to regional development funds and existing modernization opportunities for communities. Local public authorities addressed various topics, including street lighting, voluntary amalgamation, financial decentralization, road construction, and the twinning of localities in the Republic of Moldova with those in Romania and other European countries.
