Russia’s loan for Transnistria: Serebrian states that it was previously a grant

The constitutional authorities are unaware of any loan from Russia that the separatist leaders are referring to. According to Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian, previous discussions were about a grant that Moscow intended to provide.

“I don’t know what Mr. Krasnoselski means because, initially, it was about a grant. It’s a matter of language and expression. Honestly, I am not aware of any loans he might be referring to,” Serebrian commented.

The separatist authorities claim they are negotiating a “functional loan” from Russia to purchase gas from the EU. The amount is estimated to be between 50 and 150 million euros, but authorities did not disclose the repayment conditions.

Previously, officials from the left bank of the Dniester stated that Russia would supply the region with “humanitarian gas” without clarifying the term. Later, the head of the so-called Transnistrian diplomacy, Vitali Ignatiev, stated that this aid would be a loan.

The Transnistrian authorities plan to buy gas through a Hungarian company, with payment handled by a firm based in Dubai. However, it remains unclear whether Ukraine will allow the transit of gas to Moldova’s separatist region through its territory.
