Surprising Voter Turnout at Moldova’s General Local Elections

At 9:00 PM, the polling stations opened for Sunday’s general local elections have closed. The vote counting has now begun in the presence of accredited national and international observers. According to the Central Election Commission (CEC), the preliminary voter turnout at the closing of polling stations is nearly 1.15 million citizens, which means an under 50% presence at voting.

At 10:00 PM, members of the Central Election Commission (CEC) held a press conference. All the latest information on the electoral process and the initial preliminary results were presented on Rlive.md and RLIVE TV.

“We have no information that an extension was necessary to allow voters to cast their votes at any polling station during the reserved two-hour period in case such situations arose,” announced Angelica Caraman, the President of the CEC.

Preliminarily, approximately 1.14 million voters participated in the election on November 5, which represents 41% of the total number of registered voters on the list.

Repeated voting will take place in eight localities across the country. The Central Election Commission announced that the electoral threshold for the local election was not met in these areas.

These localities are Sămănanca in Orhei, Cunicea in Florești, Nicolaevca in Florești, Chirsova in Găgăuzia, Aluatu in Taraclia, Cotovscoe in Găgăuzia, Salcia in Taraclia, and Chioselia in Găgăuzia. Repeated elections will be held there in two weeks.

Preliminarily, according to the authorities, there were fewer voters participating in the 2023 election compared to 2019.

Yesterday, on November 5, 2023, general local elections took place in the Republic of Moldova. The nearly 2,000 polling stations were open from 7:00 AM until 9:00 PM. According to the Central Election Commission (CEC), this election will determine 898 mayors and 11,058 local councilors, including 9,972 from villages (communes), and towns, and 1,086 from districts/municipalities.

The election was monitored by over 1,500 national and international observers. Out of the total, 1,092 national observers represent 8 civil society associations in the country, with the majority of observers accredited at the request of the Promo-LEX Association.
