Russia attempted to undermine democratic institutions in the Republic of Moldova, according to a statement from President Joe Biden following the presidential elections in the country. The American leader described Maia Sandu’s victory as a historic event.
Biden stated that the Moldovans supported a “secure, prosperous, and democratic” vision for the country’s development. In this context, the White House leader also highlighted citizens’ support for the country’s European path during the referendum on EU integration.
“Russia attempted to undermine the democratic institutions and electoral processes in the Republic of Moldova. However, Russia failed. The people of the Republic of Moldova exercised their democratic right to choose their future on a path aligned with Europe and democracies worldwide,” Biden stated.
