The National Library Goes Digital: Over €750,000 EU Project with the CUL Iasi

The National Library of the Republic of Moldova joined a cross-border project as a partner. The library earned selection for a European Union–funded initiative totaling over €753,000. Coordinated by the “Mihai Eminescu” Central University Library (CUL) of Iasi, the project aims to modernize the infrastructure of participating libraries and create a mobile-accessible virtual school library for students on both sides of the Prut River.

Veronica Bors told IPN the project will help preserve cultural heritage, boost digitization, and expand access to information. She noted the project provides “an opportunity for international collaboration, which can enhance academic prestige and open new channels for sharing knowledge and expertise globally.”

“We will help foster a culture of reading through the ‘Digital School Textbook’ program, which aims to encourage literacy and education. We’ll also support educational improvement by equipping the library and offering learning resources, particularly through the creation of the Center for Innovation in Education,” Veronica Bors stated.

The “Digital School Textbook” program will deliver over one million textbook pages to schools across northeastern Romania and Moldova. The National Library of Moldova will develop the program in partnership with the CUL Iasi. According to Bors, a key priority is ensuring that rural and disadvantaged schools receive access to these digital materials. The initiative will also launch a mobile app called “School Library.”

The National Library in Chisinau will upgrade its facilities by establishing an Educational Innovation Center. The CUL Iasi will create a similar center. Both centers will support online, in-person, and VR-based learning. They will also offer media literacy lessons, teaching users how to navigate various social media and mass media platforms. These spaces will be open to students, teachers, and university learners from rural and urban areas.

The project acronymed BIBLIOTECH will run for 18 months. The Regional Office for Cross-Border Cooperation in Iasi, under Romania’s Ministry of Development, Public Works and Administration, will oversee financing and implementation.
