The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, had a meeting with the Prime Minister of Romania, Marcel Ciolacu, on the morning of Wednesday, September 6th. The Romanian government issued a press release in this regard.
“The Romanian Prime Minister appreciated the participation of the President of the Republic of Moldova in this international event. Romania strongly supports Chisinau’s request to associate itself with this cooperation format, which aims, among other things, to identify concrete ways to engage the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine in projects aimed at increasing interconnectivity in the fields of energy, transportation, and digital in the region,” emphasized Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu.
According to the press release, the two officials evaluated the status of bilateral relations and appreciated the excellent level of cooperation.
“The Prime Minister of Romania and the President of the Republic of Moldova expressed full openness to continue the dialogue on the same lines and to work together to achieve concrete results for the benefit of the citizens of both countries.

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu mentioned that Romania recently transferred the first installment of 10 million euros for the financing of priority projects based on the Agreement between the Government of Romania and the Government of the Republic of Moldova for the implementation of a non-reimbursable technical and financial assistance program worth 100 million euros. The funds from this first installment were directed towards the purchase of minibusses for school transportation and local infrastructure and development projects (water supply, sewage, etc.),” the press release further states.
In conclusion, the head of the Romanian government reaffirmed political and technical support for the integration of the Republic of Moldova into the European Union, emphasizing that obtaining a decision on the opening of accession negotiations at the European Council meeting in December is a top priority at the moment.
Maia Sandu’s meeting with Klaus Iohannis
Furthermore, Maia Sandu also shook hands with the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, in Bucharest. The two heads of state met on the sidelines of the Three Seas Initiative summit.
“We had a very good discussion with President Maia Sandu. I congratulated the Republic of Moldova for becoming an associated participating state in the Three Seas Initiative,” said Iohannis after the meeting.
Sandu and Iohannis discussed the progress of Moldova’s integration into the EU. Officials also referred to the opening of negotiations for Moldova’s accession to the European Union.
Additionally, the discussions also covered strategic interconnections. Statements about infrastructure projects were made by Andrei Spînu, a member of the Moldovan delegation in Bucharest.
The Minister of Infrastructure revealed to Romanian journalists that there are plans to build a stone bridge over the Prut River in Leova, and the government’s plans also include launching a high-speed train on the Chișinău-Bucharest route.
