In childhood, many of us dreamed of becoming artists, including interior, exterior, or fashion designers. However, only a few succeeded in achieving their dream. Among those who managed to embrace one of these three professions is the protagonist of our story today, Maria Lefter, a graduate of the “Fashion – Fashion Design” specialty at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, “Ion Creangă” State Pedagogical University. Therefore, in the following, we invite you to discover the young woman’s first clothing collection – “Vato” – which is actually part of her bachelor’s thesis.
The collection “Vato”
The young designer chose to create in an avant-garde style, which, by the way, is one of the most popular in the world of decoration. It stands out for the use of geometric shapes that adapt to the modern times and aims to break traditional patterns. It is precisely for this reason that Maria opted for this style, because it “is characterized by freedom of creation, by the combination of non-traditional forms, colors, materials, and accessories.”
The designer’s works are indeed quite innovative and interesting, and according to her, an important reference in creating the collection was the possibility of reusing different materials and objects. “Because in art, everything is possible, through reusing, combining, and folding the material, we created new artistic forms.”
Additionally, Maria mentioned that she used the “foam blowing” method in creating the desired accessories.
“In creating the clothing collection, I worked together with my artistic coordinator, Ala Leancă-Lupu. The whole process took approximately a year, and since I made it through mock-up modeling, I did not encounter difficulties but, on the contrary, I gained great satisfaction.”
The young designer shared with us that the name of the collection, “Vato,” was inspired by the renowned voluminous and extravagant collar of Spanish costumes from the 17th century. The specific elements of this collar, such as the waves, embossing, and origami-like folds, are found in the majority of the outfits.
Why Black and Red?
“I chose the contrast between these two colors because I consider black the color of refinement, elegance, prestige, seriousness, and intelligence. However, at the same time, it is quite ‘mysterious,’ often associated with the unknown. On the other hand, the color red always attracts attention and conveys self-confidence, strong will, boldness, determination, and passion,” emphasizes the young fashion designer.
The passion for fashion design
The young designer told us that from a young age, she wanted to have clothes that were different from her classmates’ and to be unique and original. This desire led her to constantly wonder how a simple drawing could be the basis for unique clothing items. However, she took her first step in this field only in 2015 when she applied to the Technological College in Chișinău, specializing in “Leather Articles Modeling and Technology.”
“Later on, feeling that I wanted to acquire more knowledge in this field, I took a tailoring and sewing course. After graduating from college, I went to the ‘Ion Creangă’ State Pedagogical University, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design. Here, I studied the technical and artistic design of clothing, learned various methods and techniques that can be used in creating clothing designs, as well as other useful information that shaped me as a specialist in the field,” says Maria.
