The leaders of the Baltic countries signed a joint declaration in Chisinau in support of Moldova’s accession to the European Union. The Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia presidents would celebrate Independence Day with us.
Mr. Dorin Recean thanked the officials of the three Baltic countries, President of Estonia Alar Karis, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs and President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda, for joining us on the 33rd anniversary of our independence. The Prime Minister of Moldova pointed out that the visit is a sign that we are part of the European family.
“Today, Moldova’s friends are with us. Their visit means that we are a family, and families and prizes visit each other on important days like today. The Baltic countries are a source of inspiration for us. They, like us, fought for freedom, and this year, they are celebrating 20 years in the EU. Now we have the opportunity to realize our goal as a country to prepare Moldova to become a member of the European Union by 2030”, said the Prime Minister of Moldova.

Gitanis Nauseda thanked the Moldovan authorities for becoming the first to recognize Lithuania’s independence after the break-up of the USSR. The official reiterated Vilnius’ support for our country’s European integration.
“On behalf of the people of Lithuania, I would like to congratulate President Maia Sandu on the occasion of 33 years of independence. I am here to reiterate my support for your accession to the European Union. The Republic of Moldova is a European nation, and your efforts are proof of your commitment,” the Lithuanian President said.
Estonian President Alar Karis reiterated that Moldova’s accession to the European Union will mean peace. He recalled that the European Union had brought freedom to his country.
“Happy birthday, Moldova! It is wonderful to be back. Thank you for your hospitality and warm welcome. The Republic of Moldova is at a crossroads, a situation we are familiar with. We have voices promoting both directions, but at the end of the day, only one direction is the way to peace. Becoming a member of the EU is not just the right choice, but the best choice”, said the leader from Tallinn.
Latvia’s Head of State, Edgars Rinkevics, reiterated the Baltic states’ support for Moldova’s accession to the European Union. The official said that at the meeting, they discussed how the administrations in Riga, Tallinn, and Vilnius can support us and noted the progress made by our country after applying for EU membership:
“As the Presidents of Lithuania and Estonia said, you have the best friends in the Baltic States, who wish you all the best when it comes to your journey towards EU membership. We support you in your aspirations. We are here to discuss how we can support you. I want to mention that you have achieved the rule of law, strengthening the fight against corruption and developing the energy sector,” Rinkevics said.
The three presidents are due to take to the scene in the Grand National Assembly Square on the evening of August 27 to congratulate Moldovans on Independence Day.
