The mayor of Chisinau, Ion Ceban, stated that, despite years of intense discussion about the Republic of Moldova’s European integration, the authorities have been slow to take concrete action. He added that democracy in the country remains fragile, the rule of law exists mostly on paper, and human rights are periodically violated.
“In fact, the Republic of Moldova is a captured state, where institutions that should be independent in a democratic and EU candidate country are subordinated to political interests instead of citizens’ interests and are often used as tools against political opponents,” the mayor declared.
