The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, sent a video message after her official visit to Italy, highlighting recent progress in bilateral relations between the two countries. She stated that the political dialogue between Chisinau and Rome has significantly improved over the past four years.
In her message, Maia Sandu emphasized the significance of the Moldovan community in Italy, which is currently the largest Moldovan diaspora in Europe. “Our people are respected because they work honestly and have integrated nicely,” she declared.
Sandu recalled that in the 2000s, many Moldovans arrived in Italy under difficult conditions and were unable to return home for a long time due to a lack of legal documents. She noted that Moldovan–Italian relations now stand at a high level, strengthened through official visits and institutional cooperation.

She highlighted the signing of a new bilateral pension agreement as one of the most important achievements of this dialogue. So far, only Albania and the Republic of Moldova have successfully concluded such an agreement with Italy.
The authorities of both countries are also working to improve the agreement on recognizing Moldovan driver’s licenses in Italy, a step of major importance for the diaspora.
Sandu highlighted that Italy provided financial support to Moldova during the energy crisis, helping to fund compensation for vulnerable citizens affected by rising prices. She emphasized that Italy firmly supports Moldova’s European path and urged citizens to safeguard the trust gained in relations with the Italian authorities.
“We have gained Italy’s trust and friendship thanks to our joint efforts. Let us take care to maintain what we have achieved,” Sandu concluded.
Her visit to Italy forms part of the Republic of Moldova’s broader efforts to strengthen foreign relations and support the diaspora in countries with significant Moldovan communities.
