Mihai Ghimpu, former President of the Parliament and former interim President of the Republic of Moldova, is calling on other former presidents to support and promote the constitutional referendum on October 20 regarding the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union, reports IPN.
”Today, we are in a situation similar to 2016. Whether people approve or not, our direction was critical back then, and it remains so now. We face a choice: to stay under the influence of the Russian Federation or to move towards the civilized world, towards Europe, and eventually reunite with our motherland, Romania,” said Mihai Ghimpu, honorary president of the Liberal Party, during a press briefing broadcast live by Rlive.md.
Thus, Ghimpu launched the public campaign “Presidents for the Referendum,” he also issued a statement referencing the tragic past of Moldovan Romanians on the left bank of the Prut under Russian occupation. Additionally, he highlighted the current complicated political situation caused by the Russian Federation’s interference in Moldova’s internal affairs.
“Until the Republic of Moldova reunites with Romania, integration with the European Union is the only intermediate solution that can help Moldova live in prosperity,” Ghimpu stated.
The Liberal argues that during their time in office, former Presidents of the Parliament and former Presidents of the Republic of Moldova promoted European integration. Since the constitutional referendum scheduled for October 20 is now a certainty, public discussions about its necessity are unnecessary.
“The EU offers us a chance to break free from the sphere of influence of the Russian Federation. I, Mihai Ghimpu, former president of the Parliament and former interim president of the Republic of Moldova, believe that all former Presidents of the Parliament and the Republic who have promoted European integration and who desire a free and prosperous future for the citizens must firmly support the referendum on Moldova’s integration into the European Union,” noted Mihai Ghimpu.
In his view, their silence would only amount to supporting those who wish to reattach the Republic of Moldova to the Russian Federation.
“I call on all the mentioned colleagues to actively support and promote the October 20 referendum through public appearances, press conferences, media, round tables, and interviews on television, radio, or online platforms. Our support for the referendum would mobilize voters and thus make our path towards the democratic world and reunification with our motherland irreversible,” the leader of the Liberal Party added.
