The narrative that Maia Sandu is the “president of the diaspora” originates from the Russian Federation and is intended to divide Moldovan society. MEP Siegfried Muresan made this statement during the Rezoomat program on RliveTV.
According to the official from Brussels, citizens within the country and abroad have the same rights. And Maia Sandu is the legitimately elected president, even though diaspora votes tipped the balance in her favor.
“The Russian Federation is trying to divide Moldova by labeling some citizens as ‘good’ and others as ‘bad.’ We must reject this divisive narrative. All Moldovan citizens are equal, no matter where they live—inside the country or abroad, in villages or cities, or which language they speak. They all share the same rights and obligations. This narrative of hatred and division only holds Moldova back, and we need to counter it. The final vote count showed 55% support for one candidate, making this individual the legitimately elected president of Moldova,” said Romanian MEP Siegfried Muresan.
