Zakharova has criticized the presidential elections in Moldova. She expressed discontent that only five polling stations have been opened in Russia

Maria Zakharova made new, visibly manipulative statements regarding the elections in Moldova. The spokesperson for Russian diplomacy expressed dissatisfaction that only five polling stations are opening in Russia.

The official refers to preliminary registration data and claims that around 8,000 nationals expressed their intention to vote in Russia, compared to approximately 2,500 in Italy, according to TASS. Zakharova refers to the preliminary registration data for 2024 but does not mention the number of Moldovans residing in the two countries.

“Constraining the voting rights of Moldovan citizens in Russia has been done under exaggerated pretenses. The Russian side has expressed its readiness to provide all necessary assistance in organizing the vote for Moldovan citizens residing in our country, and there have never been any issues with ensuring security. We observe that Chisinau is depriving the Moldovan diaspora in our country of the opportunity to speak on the most important issues of their country’s life. It is a blatant violation of human rights and democratic norms.”

“According to the Central Electoral Commission of Moldova, over 8,000 voters have registered in Russia, but only five polling stations will be open. In Italy, fewer than 2,500 citizens have registered, yet 60 polling stations will be open in the UK and 16 in both the USA and Romania. This situation reflects the ruling regime’s fear,” said Zakharova.

The authorities in the Republic of Moldova have not yet commented on the statements made by the spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

We note that 234 polling stations will open abroad for the presidential elections and the referendum on joining the EU, which will be held simultaneously on October 20, 2024.
