31 Years Since the Battle of Tighina: Honoring the Sacrifice of 200 Fallen Heroes

On this day, we commemorate the 31st anniversary of the battles that took place in Tighina, during the Transnistrian War in 1992, where the most violent confrontations occurred between Moldovan troops and Transnistrian separatists supported by the Russian army.

At a certain point, Moldovan forces controlled almost the entire city up to the Dniester River. However, the battle came to an end with the intervention of Russian troops siding with the Transnistrian separatists, shifting the balance of power.

On June 19, an attack was launched by Transnistrian guards and Cossacks against the Moldovan police in Tighina. The police managed to hold their positions, and later that night, they received reinforcements from other police detachments and volunteers from Varnița.

By the morning of June 20, the majority of the city was under the control of Moldovan forces. Tanks from the 14th Army of the Russian Federation attempted to cross the bridge from Tiraspol to Tighina but were halted by the Moldovan forces.

Volunteers played a crucial role in the Battle of Tighina, voluntarily putting their lives at risk to defend the integrity of the Republic of Moldova.

In the end, Russian and Transnistrian troops managed to force the bridge and enter the city.

It is estimated that approximately 200 Moldovan soldiers and civilians lost their lives in the battles of Tighina, with another 300 wounded. Today, we remember their sacrifice and pay tribute to their bravery and dedication to defending their homeland.
