Emmanuel Macron Highlights Maia Sandu’s Courage While Addressing His Ambassadors About the Russian Threat

French President Emmanuel Macron praised the courage and determination of Moldova’s President Maia Sandu on Monday during a speech to France’s ambassadors. He spoke about the challenges of today’s “turbulent” world and the Russian threat and outlined the main diplomatic tasks for 2025. Macron noted that Russia destabilized and falsified the electoral process in Georgia. “Russia tried the same in Moldova but failed. I commend President Maia Sandu’s courage and determination,” Macron added.

He urged diplomats to remain vigilant against Russian interference in elections, especially in the important upcoming polls in Romania and Moldova.

“We must remain vigilant, collectively, for the legislative elections that will take place in the coming months. Russia did not hesitate to manipulate the electoral process in Romania, a European Union member state. By repeatedly testing our defenses, Russia has threatened European territory, demonstrated its ability to strike with advanced technologies, increased cyber disruptions, and effectively globalized the Ukrainian conflict. Russia is the only force escalating the war in Ukraine,” Macron emphasized.

Macron also referred to election manipulation in Romania and Moldova during his New Year’s address to the French.

“Recent events in Syria, election manipulation in Moldova, Georgia, and Romania, as well as terrorist attacks in Europe and its neighborhood, show that we can never take our security and the proper functioning of our democracies for granted,” Macron said in his New Year’s speech.
