(VIDEO) Prosecutor vetting put on hold. Maia Sandu: The evaluation of prosecutors was funded by USAID

The commission evaluating prosecutors in Moldova has paused its work following the U.S. decision to halt funding for justice sector projects. President Maia Sandu announced this during a televised interview on TV8. According to her, authorities are looking for solutions.

“This decision affects vetting (referring to the U.S. suspension of development assistance to other countries) because USAID funded the evaluation of prosecutors.” Now that this funding has been stopped, we don’t know if it will be restored. In the meantime, we are trying to compensate with European Union funds, meaning the EU would take over financing this evaluation. But there will still be a pause, that is clear—on top of the previous delays, there will be another one,” Maia Sandu stated.

At the end of January, however, Justice Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru stated the opposite, assuring that the vetting commissions’ work was not affected.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending development assistance to other countries for 90 days to assess their compliance with U.S. foreign policy. The Republic of Moldova is among the countries affected.
