President Maia Sandu addressed the General Assembly of Judges, reaffirming the government’s commitment to judicial reform as a pillar of Moldova’s European integration. In her speech, she emphasized the importance of rebuilding public trust in the judiciary and acknowledged the complex yet essential process of extraordinary external evaluation of judges.
“We all have a common goal: restoring trust in justice,” said President Sandu. “This trust cannot be imposed by law alone – it must be earned daily, through correct deeds, decisions, behavior.”
Reform Efforts and Resistance
Reflecting on the vetting process aimed at cleaning up the judiciary, the president noted that while the evaluation faced resistance from parts of the system, the results show it was a necessary step for meaningful change:
“Looking back, we can confidently say it was worth it. Despite resistance on behalf of parts of the system, we managed to pave the way for real change,” Sandu stated.

Acknowledging Judicial Integrity
Sandu also thanked judges who acted with integrity amid challenges to democracy, especially in cases related to electoral corruption. These actions, she noted, offer hope that Moldova can overcome systemic corruption and resist foreign interference.
Path to Europe
The president concluded by underlining that judicial reform is not only about political will or international support but about the moral and professional commitment of those in the justice system:
“To complete the reform, we need your dedication. A strong, fair judiciary is vital for Moldova’s future in the European Union.”
This address comes when Moldova is under intense scrutiny from both domestic and international observers as it advances toward EU membership. Judicial independence, integrity, and transparency remain key benchmarks in that process.
