The European Union does not condition Moldova’s accession to resolve the Transnistrian conflict, said Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission. In an interview with Radio Moldova, Kallas emphasized that the unresolved conflict should not block Moldova’s European path.
“The EU accession process must not be held hostage by such a conflict,” Kallas stated. She added that several countries joined the EU while facing unresolved territorial disputes. “We aim to avoid such tensions, but the EU will continue to enlarge whether or not this conflict is resolved.”
Kallas stressed that Moldova’s progress towards EU integration depends primarily on internal reforms and political will in Chisinau. While the EU will support a peaceful resolution of the Transnistrian issue, it insists that negotiations must not obstruct the country’s broader development.

During the interview, Kallas highlighted the EU’s concrete support for Moldova during last winter’s energy crisis, calling it a clear example of European solidarity. She noted that Moldova remains part of the European security space and reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to helping the country build resilience against hybrid threats, especially in the ongoing war in Ukraine and broader regional tensions.
Kaja Kallas is on her first official visit to Moldova since assuming office on December 1, 2024. Her visit concludes today with a joint press conference alongside President Maia Sandu.
