Moldova Connects to European Networks: Highways, Bridges, and a Potential Aviation Hub

Moldova aims to fully integrate into Europe’s key trade routes through a comprehensive program that builds the highway to Ungheni, expands Chisinau International Airport, and launches the symbolic Ungheni–Ungheni Bridge, which connects the country to Romania and the European Union, IPN reports.

Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Vladimir Bolea, emphasized in an IPN interview that these efforts reconnect Moldova to the European economic area and major trade networks. “We reconnect our country to European trade networks through every action we take—be it road, rail, or air transport,” said the minister.

Moldova builds the Chisinau–Ungheni highway as a strategic project, while Romania will complete its section by 2028–2030. “Once the highway is complete, traveling from the EU to Moldova by road will become much easier,” Bolea explained.

In April 2024, Moldova began the Ungheni–Ungheni Bridge, symbolically named the “Bridge of Flowers.” This project will form the endpoint of the highway on Romania’s side and will open routes that link Moldova to Romania, Odesa, and the Black Sea. “We aim to ensure that the roads to Odesa or the Black Sea cross Moldova, not bypass it,” added the minister.

The government prioritizes expanding Chisinau International Airport. By adopting the Aviation Code, Moldova aligned the airport with EU standards and attracted more airlines.

Bolea stated that transforming Chisinau into a regional aviation hub would mark a significant success, as “a hub brings financial resources, creates jobs, and boosts the overall economy.” In 2024, over four million passengers passed through the airport—a significant increase reflecting the success of recent policies.

The minister highlighted that all legislative reforms are interconnected and essential to align with EU standards, boosting citizen mobility and national economic growth.

Moldova funds the infrastructure program through EU support and international partnerships. It aims to reduce travel time, improve road safety, and attract investment.
