Estonian MEP Sven Mikser: Moldova Remains a Target for Russian Interference Ahead of Elections

Estonian MEP Sven Mikser warned that Moldova remains vulnerable to Russian interference ahead of this fall’s parliamentary elections. In an interview with Moldova1, he noted improvements in Chisinau’s institutional resilience, particularly after the 2024 presidential election and constitutional referendum.

Addressing Moldova’s separatist regions, Mikser stressed the need to resolve the conflicts in Transnistria and Gagauzia peacefully. He emphasized that during the energy crisis, residents on the left bank of the Dniester realized Russia had abandoned them. In contrast, Europe stepped in with support, even though Tiraspol refused to accept a substantial EU aid package.

“The situation is not yet fully resolved, and challenges remain,” Mikser said. “But with patience and determination, I believe the current Moldovan authorities can handle them responsibly.”

He welcomed Moldova’s European path but highlighted the many reforms still pending. “The government currently enjoys a rare absolute majority in Parliament. In the future, governing through coalitions may become necessary, and reforms must not lose momentum,” he added.

Regarding Moldova’s possible EU accession by 2030, Mikser was cautious. He said success depends on the pace of reforms, Moldova’s internal readiness, and political decisions within the EU. “The roadmap is clear, but politics will play a major role. Moldova must be ready when the opportunity arises—otherwise, it might have to wait a long time for the next one.”

Mikser also emphasized that Moldova must not delay its EU integration because of Ukraine’s situation or broader geopolitical factors.
