Kyiv’s special representative for the Transnistrian settlement, Yuriy Klimenko, was dismissed from his position by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky. A decree to this effect was signed by Zelenski on December 26.
According to Ukrainian media, Klimenko was dismissed from this position because he was appointed ambassador to Argentina.
Previously, Klimenko worked in the embassies of Ukraine in the Benelux countries and the United States. From 2005 to 2006 he was Consul General of Ukraine in Thessaloniki (Greece), and from 2006 to 2010 – Consul General of Ukraine in Barcelona (Spain). From 2011 to 2013, he served as the First Deputy Head of the Main Department for International Relations of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine. After that, until April 2021, he was the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva.

It is important to mention that Kyiv does not recognize the independence of Transnistria and supports the territorial integrity of Moldova. Ukraine acts as a mediator in the Transnistrian settlement in the “5+2” format, whose participants are Moldova and Transnistria as parties to the conflict, Russia, Ukraine, and the OSCE are mediators, the United States, and the European Union are observers.
