Air pollution issue in Moldova – mitigated?

The Environment Agency claims that in the last 24 hours, there have been insignificant violations of sanitary standards, for short periods of time, near industrial areas and in places with traffic jams.

Atmospheric air quality was monitored on Wednesday and Thursday at the observation stations in Chisinau and Balti, the momentary maximum concentration exceeded the sanitary norm in several areas:

  • in the municipality of Chisinau for nitrogen dioxide – 1.3 times on T. Vladimirescu str.; of phenol – 1.1 times on T. Vladimirescu str.;
  • in the municipality of Balti, the concentration of nitrogen dioxide was exceeded 1.3 times on Ștefan cel Mare Street.

The maximum permissible concentration for the daily average has been exceeded:

  • in the municipality of Chisinau, for nitrogen dioxide – 1.1 times;
  • in the municipality of Balti for nitrogen dioxide – 1.4 times, and for formic aldehyde – 1.4 times.

“The recorded values of suspended particles (PM10) – sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide, monitored at the automatic traffic type station, between January 18 and 19, 2023, fell within the established limits”, say the specialists.

Radiation norms are within normal limits. Forecasts show that between January 10 and 20, weather conditions will contribute to the dispersion of pollutants in the air. Exceeding the sanitary norms for short periods of time is not excluded.
