Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service has spread false narratives that pose serious warnings for the Republic of Moldova, says political analyst Anatol Taranu.
Taranu urges Moldova’s authorities to stay prepared and develop solutions in case Russian forces attempt a military provocation. During a public debate organized by IPN, titled “What Do Russian Falsehoods Rely On? How Should Chisinau Respond?” the historian and former Moldovan ambassador to Russia shared his views.
“Previously, Russian officials ignored relations with former Soviet republics, as Moscow refused to perceive these states as sovereign and independent,” said Taranu, recalling his time as Moldova’s ambassador to Russia.
Taranu highlighted how Russian authorities treated ex-Soviet republics with indifference in the past and continue to do so today. Addressing Russia’s claim that Chisinau plans a military operation in the Transnistrian region, he dismissed it as “not a diplomatic document in the true sense of the word.” He described this narrative as part of a hybrid warfare strategy and suggested Moscow may harbor additional hidden objectives.

Taranu argued that Kremlin officials likely know Moldovans recognize the claim as false but continue to push it regardless. In his view, Moscow is trying to justify potential actions in Transnistria.
He accused Russian authorities of attempting to shift blame for a possible humanitarian crisis in the separatist region onto Moldova while portraying Chisinau as the aggressor.
Taranu criticized Russia’s weak analytical capabilities but urged Moldova to stay prepared for any scenario the Kremlin might implement. He also pointed out that these disinformation tactics could influence Moldova’s upcoming parliamentary elections.
Analyzing Moldova’s Defense Strategy debates, Taranu claimed that some Moldovan lawmakers act as agents serving Russia’s interests.
Referring to Russia’s claims about military actions in Transnistria, Taranu recalled unofficial discussions in Ukraine about a possible military operation against the breakaway region. However, Chisinau rejected this scenario, insisting on resolving the Transnistrian conflict peacefully.
