EU Grants: Germany Offers €33 Million to Moldova. Where Will the Funds Be Used

Germany will offer a €33 million grant for Moldova to finance the Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund.

“The Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund, established by the Government of the Republic of Moldova, supports the population during crises. Through our contribution, we aim to ensure accessible energy for vulnerable families and households, sending a clear signal of Germany’s long-term and reliable support for the people of Moldova,” said Ambassador Margret Uebber.

The funds will be provided through the German Development Bank (KfW) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

“We are grateful to Germany for its continued support in helping Moldova tackle current energy challenges. A €33 million grant will directly benefit our most vulnerable citizens, ensuring their access to essential energy services. The support through the Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund guarantees protection for families in Moldova and advances our path toward energy security and European integration. Germany’s support is further evidence of the strong partnership and solidarity between our nations,” said Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Dorin Recean.

This new assistance continues Germany’s support from the 2022-2023 winter season when a German grant for the Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund helped 900,000, or approximately 75% of all households in Moldova, through energy subsidies.

The €33 million complements a recent support package announced by the European Union.
Also, Moldova will receive €10 million in non-reimbursable financial assistance from Italy for energy meter installations, digitization of the energy sector, and social protection. Sweden has also announced that it will support Moldova with approximately €8.7 million to reduce energy vulnerability.
