Milestone Support: EU Backs Moldova’s Enlargement and Reforms

“The Republic of Moldova is the only country among those targeted for European Union enlargement that enjoys the support of all member states,” stated Iulian Groza, the executive director of the Institute for European Policies and Reforms, in an interview with Radio Moldova.

According to him, the ad-hoc appearance on the agenda of today and tomorrow’s Brussels meeting of the phrase “enlargement and reforms” implies that all aspiring countries for accession are to be reevaluated.

“If we look at the agenda of the European Council, we will see that an updated agenda has appeared overnight, and the item of enlargement has included reforms. Enlargement and reforms will be the subject of discussion at the council level, which will have to result in a decision. It is clear that the Republic of Moldova is the only candidate country enjoying the support of all member states. Communications from Brussels and other capitals indicate that these decisions are supported by all member states, the European Commission, and the European Parliament,” said Iulian Groza.

Iulian Groza also mentioned that at this stage, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine cannot be decoupled.

It is worth noting that initially, the summit agenda mentioned that only the enlargement process would be discussed, but before the start of the meeting, the aspect of reforms also emerged.
