The Republic of Moldova aims to complete negotiations for joining the European Union by the end of 2027—a goal that demands rapid and substantial progress over the next few years. President Maia Sandu underscored this objective during a televised interview, stressing the importance of this autumn’s parliamentary elections in maintaining Moldova’s pro-European trajectory.
“Our commitment—our working plan—is to finalize accession negotiations by late 2027,” said Sandu. “This means taking serious steps, but the EU enlargement commissioner shares the goal of concluding the process by 2028. So, it’s not impossible. I truly believe, given our current circumstances and the progress we’ve shown in recent years—progress that Brussels appreciates—that we can achieve this.”
Sandu warned that Moldova must not squander this opportunity to join the European Union, saying the chance is no longer a distant dream but a realistic goal within the next four years.
“It’s vital not to miss this chance. For me, EU integration is no longer something 10 or 20 years away—it’s within reach. But to succeed, we need a pro-European majority in the next Parliament. That’s the immediate and most important goal.”

“We see how much effort the Kremlin is making to sway Moldova’s elections,” said Sandu. “Last year, we witnessed unprecedented interference. The Kremlin will try again this year. Moscow wants to replace Moldova’s leadership with people they can manipulate.”
She emphasized that only Moldovan citizens can decide the country’s future.
“Moldovans must decide for Moldova. That’s what sovereignty means,” Sandu declared. “People need to understand the consequences. When you sell your vote, you sell your country. That’s a serious betrayal. We must all grasp the damage this causes—to our future, nation, and independence.”
