Moldovan FA Minister Popescu’s Diplomatic Engagements at the UN General Assembly

“We are in a crucial stage of our journey towards a more united and prosperous Europe,” stated Vice Prime Minister Nicu Popescu at an event organized by USAID in New York.

“I am deeply grateful to all those who support this mission. We continue to collaborate to achieve tangible progress and build a better future for our fellow citizens,” Popescu mentioned at the event titled “Fighting Corruption and Accelerating European Integration for Ukraine and Moldova.”

Minister Nicu Popescu highlighted the significant progress made by the Republic of Moldova in implementing the nine recommendations of the European Commission, including combating corruption and strengthening the rule of law. He also emphasized the importance of international community support regarding our firm goal of joining the European Union.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration (MAEIE), on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, our country’s foreign minister held a meeting with Helga Maria Schmid, the Secretary-General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Officials discussed crucial aspects related to regional security, given the context of Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine. They also discussed the current status of the Transnistrian settlement process and the progress made in our journey toward European Union accession.

Additionally, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Nicu Popescu, along with President Maia Sandu, had a meeting with Samantha Power, the Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The discussion focused on Moldova’s progress, judicial system reform, and measures taken to revitalize the country’s economy.

Minister Nicu Popescu had a constructive discussion with Elina Valtonen, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland, at the UN General Assembly. The Moldovan official expressed gratitude for Finland’s strong commitment to supporting the European path of the Republic of Moldova and underscored the importance of continued support in this direction.

Vice Prime Minister Nicu Popescu chaired an informal meeting of the foreign ministers of the member states of the Central European Initiative (CEI), as Moldova currently holds the presidency of the CEI.

“I emphasized that the accession of candidate states from the CEI to the EU is the top priority of Moldova’s presidency. The accession of new states to the EU will bring benefits both for the citizens of CEI member states and for the entire region. Furthermore, the discussions highlighted the need for meetings in this regional format and the importance of constant multilateral dialogue, especially in the current geopolitical context.”
